Why I Chose Arab American Literature
I chose this class because I haven't really dived into
Arab literature. Which feels like a disgrace to say since I've taken so many
classes to learn Arabic. I also tend to read more fantasy books than fiction or
non-fiction, so I felt this class would be a good way to ease myself into those
genres. Hafsah Faizal and Sabaa Tahir are two authors who've been on my radar
for a while and are the only Arab American authors I can think of at the
moment. Tahir’s debut series An Ember in the Ashes has been on my
to be read list for months now and I’m hoping to start it soon. And by soon I
mean when I’m not swamped with capstone. She also recently released a new book
called Heir which I hope to check out soon. I don’t know too much about
the Arab American community but I know there’s a massive community in Michigan
that’s rich with culture and people. I hope to learn more about Arab American
culture and how both cultures blend to make something new. I’m not the best at
analyzing books, especially just fiction so I hope to work on that skill
through this class, but I also hope the readings can pull me out of my reading
slump. I haven’t been able to sit and read a novel in awhile, so I hope this
class can be like a ‘pick me up’ in a way. I also hope to be able to revisit my
Arabic with this class. I haven’t studied in awhile and this class could also
help me learn new words and put certain cultural meanings into context outside
of the classroom. (283 Words)
P. S. I've never had a blog before so I'm still trying to figure out formatting and adding images. Hopefully I'll figure it out soon.
